'Wild' Ashburton Community Showcases Community Zine

Wild is a collaborative community created during the 2026 Community Showcase events across Pannawonica, Tom Price, and Paraburdoo, in the Shire of Ashburton.

Over three days, across three towns, community members were invited to get creative and contribute a zine page in response to one word:

"Wild."

Some people ran with it. Some ignored it completely.

Each contribution was created during the events, then scanned and compiled exactly as it was made. There are no edits, no corrections, and no rules, just whatever people chose to put down at the time.

Together, these pages form a snapshot of community across the Pilbara: varied, expressive, and alive with different ways of seeing and responding to the world.

About the Community Showcase Events

The Community Showcase events, run by the Shire of Ashburton, are all about bringing people together in a way that feels easy and accessible.

Theses events create space for connection, creativity, and participation, offering opportunities for community members of all ages to engage, have fun, enjoy live music, and celebrate their communities.

This zine was one small part of that. No pressure, no expectations. Just materials, a prompt, and an open invitation to contribute.

Across Three Towns

This zine came together over one weekend across:

• Pannawonica - a small mining town near the Robe River, with a strong sense of community and its own rhythm.

• Tom Price - inland, up in the ranges, surrounded by some of the most striking landscapes in WA.

• Paraburdoo - sitting on the edge of Karijini, with its own mix of history, stories, and everyday life.

About Maesons Soapbox

This project was facilitated by Maesons Soapbox - a mobile bookstore, storytelling space, and emerging zine & story distro that moves around WA, working with communities to share stories in different ways.

Zines are a big part of that. They're quick, accessible, and don't ask for perfection - which makes them a good fit for this kind of work.

Wild is part of an ongoing run of community-made zines, each one shaped by the people and places it comes from.
